Supernatural 5x22 - Swan Song
Sep. 6th, 2010 02:14 amAnd here's where it ends...
This episode, man. If it had been the end of the show, I would have been GUTTED, but it would have felt RIGHT. Although I would imagine they would have had Sam and Dean fall into the pit together rather than Sam and Adam if it was really the end of the show. But this way? It was even more heartwrenching. But I'm getting ahead of myself.
Chuck's gorgeous interludes. GUH. So perfect. The history of the Impala, showing just how important she's always been. I love that her first owner was a man "gettin' folks right for Judgment Day." That's been her life's work!
"And here's where it ends." Even knowing the show's coming back soon, that line still makes me cry, especially with the scene cutting to Sam all thinky on the hood of the Impala. Gah!
"I let him out. I gotta put him back in." I really don't think Sam could have lived with himself any other way. It was putting things right, in Sam's mind, but in Dean's? Can you even IMAGINE the huge sacrifice for him to basically sign the deal on never seeing his brother again, for all eternity, knowing he'd be locked away with SATAN HIMSELF bearing a serious grudge against him? MASSIVELY MASSIVELY HUGE. But this was it - this was Dean finally letting go and letting Sam grow up. Trusting him. Sam wasn't going behind anybody's back this time, he was working with the team. Because they were LETTING him work with the team. This was what they'd needed to do all these years and never got the hang of. And this was the end! It's just too dang heartbreaking.
Bleeding 2 demons dry for Sam to drink... nasty. Poor Dean, he has so much trouble wrapping his mind around it NOT meaning that his kid bro is a monster. And poor Sam hates seeing that look on Dean's face. Makes him feel even worse about doing it. :(
Cas snoring in the backseat was priceless. No blasting Bon Jovi this time or they'd wake their little angel. ;)
Sam telling Dean not to try to bring him back... ohhhh, that hurt. Dean had to know it couldn't be done anyway, but the thought that he would TRY was the only thing keeping him sane, you know? And then Sam added more to the promise - that Dean would find Lisa and live normal. Good ole Sam, he knows that's what Dean wants deep, deep down, and he knew Lisa would take care of him. Guh, such a gorgeous scene.
Then the goodbye hug with Bobby, and Cas lying terribly to humour Sam. Does this show know how to do a goodbye scene, or does this show know how to do a goodbye scene? *sniffle*
When Sam asks Dean not to watch the blood-drinking, I don't know which one of them I want to hug more. Maybe the Impala needed a hug in that moment, too, I don't know. I sure did! :(
And then post-blood Sam, which was basically late-season-4 Sam reincarnated. Yikes. Dean's face kills me right then, when he watches Sam march off all hyped up and bursting with power.
Lucy drew a pitchfork on the window. Cute. :P
And then the Big Moment - Sam zaps all the demons in the room with a THOUGHT, and says yes. Dean's face, yet again, when Lucy said he knew about the rings... WILL SOMEBODY PLEASE GIVE THAT BOY A BREAK ALREADY?!?! I mean, not a BREAK break, he's broken enough already. Oy. I just hate that the last word Dean got to say to Sam was "No." :(
Lucy faking being Sam just for kicks. I love the moment when his expression changes, but DANG, break Dean that little bit more, why don't you? Btw, Jared doing the Pellegrino hand-clasp thing? SO GOOD. He made that a Lucifer characteristic, it's awesome. That boys knows how to imitate.
The mirror scene!!! SOOOOOOO GOOOOOOOD. I've gotta wonder, did Sam really feel connected to Lucy the way he described it? Maybe on some level, just like on some level he enjoyed drinking the blood, but on the conscious level? No way. He didn't WANT to like it, it was just built into him to, but he fought it all the way. His FAMILY is his family, dangit! Shut up, Lucy!
Then Lucy using Sam's thirst for revenge to weaken him. All those demons from his past... including prom date Rachel Nave, who was first named in WIAWSNB in Dean's dream world. Poor, poor Sam. Will he ever be able to trust anyone again after being told how many demons shaped his path along the way?
Cas and Bobby give up, but Dean refuses. At the very least, there was no way he was going to let Sam die alone. Could the ending be ANY more heartbreaking, yet more satisfying, than that?
I love that Dean called Chuck. He knew he was risking a smiting, but what did he have left to lose? And then it's back to Lawrence, where it all began. Oh, show!
Chuck's "I honestly don't know yet" comment sounded genuine. Was that because they had a choice? But Chuck obviously felt they'd make the right one.
Interesting that Lucifer hates being called a monster just as much as Sam does. The difference being that Lucifer IS a monster, of course.
The Great Battle never gets started. Too bad. Would've been cool. But yay for saving the planet? Heh. I just wish we could have seen SOMETHING rather than Michael and Lucy just standing there talking... but Dean's entrance was insanely awesome, so that's okay. Poor Dean, though. Must have been weird to see his brothers standing there right in front of him, but they weren't his brothers. :(
Ass-butt is officially the best insult ever. Poor Cas, blown to bits again. And seeing Bobby shoot Sam and Sam break Bobby's neck? While Dean watched?! AUGH!! So. Wrong. And yet kind of foreshadowed.
And the beatdown, and Dean telling Sam he's not gonna leave him, and the ARMY MAN, and the memory flashes, and the full series recap, and ending it on the hug, and Lucy finally giving up control BECAUSE HE JUST CAN'T TAKE THE CHEESE ANY LONGER... *sobs hysterically* It was so beautiful! So tragic. And Sam opening that cage and throwing himself into it, Michael or no Michael... that's my boy!! :(
Then Dean left all alone. You know, I bet he planned on just sitting on that spot until he expired. But Cas! I love that Dean thought he was God for a second, because I was totally wondering that myself. But no, he's just God's new fave, yay! And right after healing Dean, he brought Bobby back to life. Good ole Cas. I'm so glad he got his wings back, so to speak.
Chuck's "endings are hard" speech was wonderful. And Castiel, Sheriff of Heaven! Awesome. He'd better get some dang good storylines next season. Dean and Bobby hugging goodbye while Chuck said it was the last they'd see of each other for "a very long time" FREAKED ME OUT. Chuck's definition of "very" better not be VERY very, I'm telling you. Then he says Bobby goes off hunting, but WHAT ABOUT HIS SOUL?!?!?! Gah.
And Dean wants to die or bring Sam back, but he made a promise and he kept it. Oh Dean. This whole "normal life" thing is not going to end pretty, is it? :(
As I've been saying for a while, I'm still not too sure that the whole Chuck-disappearing thing means he's God. It could just be that he knew he'd finished what he had to do, and he was taken to Heaven as a reward or something. Then again, Chuck being God could totally work in the context of what we've seen. I hope they let us know sooner rather than later what it was all about. And where's Becky??
"Nothing ever really ends... does it?" Oh, show! How I love thee. And how CRAZY AMOUNTS OF GLAD I am that you're coming back for another round! *clings to show*
That last glimpse of Sam standing there watching Dean having his family dinner... I...just...can't. ARE WE THERE YET??? Because this entire rewatch was my way of keeping my mind off the whole hiatus thing, and now the rewatch is over, and the hiatus still isn't, and now I'm back to DYING OF IMPATIENCE to see what happens next. *le sigh*
Ah, the life of a fangirl...

Dean: You're a grown, well, over-grown man.
Sam: That's the last thing I thought you'd ever say.
Dean: Might be.
Dean: I still can't get used to you at eye level.
Bobby: So, was I right?
Dean: Yeah, as always, Yoda.
Castiel: *snoring in backseat*
Dean: Aw, ain't he a little angel?
Sam: Angels don't sleep.
Dean: Sam, I got a bad feeling about this.
Sam: Well, you'd be nuts to have a good feeling about it.
Dean: So, then what am I supposed to do?
Sam: You go find Lisa. You pray to God she's dumb enough to take you in, and you... you have barbecues, and go to football games... you go live some normal, apple pie life, Dean. Promise me.
Bobby: He gets in, you fight him tooth and nail, you understand? Keep swingin'. Don't give an inch.
Sam: Yes, sir.
Sam: Take care of these guys, okay?
Castiel: *pity-face* That's not possible.
Sam: *sighs* Then humour me.
Castiel: Oh, I'm supposed to lie.
Sam: *laughs*
Castiel: Uh, sure! They'll be fine.
Sam: Just, just... stop... talking.
Sam: Alright! We're here, you sons of bitches! Come and get it!
Lucifer: Sorry if it's a bit chilly. Most people think I burn hot. It's actually quite the opposite.
Dean: Well, I'll alert the media.
Lucifer: Chock full o' Ovaltine, are we?
Lucifer: Okay, can we please drop the telenovela?
Lucifer: Come on, Sam. I've never lied to you. You could at least pay me the same respect. It's okay, I'm not mad.
Lucifer: What do you say, Sam? A fiddle of gold against your soul says I'm better than yoooou.
Lucifer: I was just messing with you. Sammy's long gone.
Lucifer: I told you... this would always happen in Detroit.
Sam: I'm gonna rip you apart from the inside out. Do you understand me?
Lucifer: Such anger, young Skywalker.
Lucifer: Because we're two halves made whole. MFEO. Literally.
Lucifer: Sam Winchester, this is your life. Azazel's gang, watching you since you were a rugrat. Jerking you around like a dog on a leash. I know how you feel about them. Me, too. So what do you say you and I blow off a little steam?
Castiel: It's starting.
Dean: Yeah, ya think, genius?
Castiel: You don't have to be mean.
Dean: So what do we do now?
Castiel: I suggest we imbibe copious quantities of alcohol... just wait for the inevitable blast wave.
Dean: Yes, well, thank you, Bukowski.
Lucifer: So. Are we having fun yet?
Dean: Who's Mistress Magda?
Chuck: Nothing, she's a, uh... just a, uh... she's a close friend.
Dean: Yeah, I'll bet, real close. Whatever happened to Becky?
Chuck: You know, it didn't work out. I had too much respect for her. *clears throat*
Dean: Well, you really got a whole virgin/hooker thing going on, don't you?
Chuck: 'Kay, this can't be why you called.
Bobby: You're gonna do somethin' stupid. You got that look.
Castiel: I just want you to understand. The only thing that you're gonna see out there is Michael killing your brother.
Dean: Well, then, I ain't gonna let him die alone.
Michael: You're a monster, Lucifer. And I have to kill you.
Lucifer: If that's the way it's gotta be... then I'd like to see you try.
Dean: Hi, boys. Sorry, am I interrupting something?
Lucifer: Dean. Even for you, this is a whole new mountain of stupid.
Castiel: Hey, ass-butt!
Lucifer: Castiel. Did you just Molotov my brother with holy fire?
Castiel: Uh, no...
Lucifer: No one dicks with Michael but me.
Lucifer: You know, I tried to be nice, for Sammy's sake. But you... are such a pain... in my ass.
Dean: Sammy? Are you in there?
Lucifer: Oh, he's in here, alright. *punches him* And he's gonna feel the snap of your bones. *punches* Every single one. We're gonna take our time. *pounds on him*
Dean: Sam. It's okay. It's okay, I'm here. I'm here. I'm not gonna leave you. *gets punched some more* I'm not gonna leave you!
Sam: It's okay, Dean. It's gonna be okay. I've got him.
Dean: Cas, are you God?
Castiel: That's a nice compliment... but no. Although, I do believe He brought me back. New and improved.
Chuck: Endings are hard. Any chapped-ass monkey with a keyboard can poop out a beginning, but endings are impossible. You try to tie up every loose end, but you never can. The fans are always gonna bitch, there's always gonna be holes, and since it's the ending it's all supposed to add up to something... I'm telling you, they're a raging pain in the ass.
Dean: So, what, you're the new sheriff in town?
Castiel: I like that, yeah. I suppose I am.
Castiel: You got what you asked for, Dean. No Paradise, no Hell, just more of the same. I mean it, Dean. What would you rather have - peace or freedom? *disappears*
Dean: Well, you really suck at goodbyes, you know that?
Dean: Hey, Lis.
Lisa: Thank God. Are you alright?
Dean: Yeah, uh... if it's not too late, I... think I'd like to take you up on that beer.
Lisa: It's never too late.
Chuck: So what's it all add up to? It's hard to say. But me, I'd say this WAS a test - for Sam and Dean. And I think they did alright. Up against good, evil, angels, devils, destiny, and God Himself. Date: 2010-09-06 08:37 pm (UTC)So much of Season 5 disappointed me (lots of it was great too, don;t get me wrong, but there was so much filler material I admit I was frustrated with the writers more often than not) - but this Swan Song was right on so many levels, even if it wasn't exactly what Kripke had in mind for the ending if the show hadn't got it's renewal...who knows.
Killer lines for me - Dean (of course) saying he ain't gonna let Sam die alone; and then that end scene with Samifer, through the beating telling Sam he was there for him - God! Break my heart show, why don't you - and then top it off with that image of broken and probably dying Dean, on his knees, Horsemen's rings in his loosened hand, a picture of pure despair.
*sigh*

Date: 2010-09-06 09:14 pm (UTC)I have to disagree with your filler comment. Considering they needed to stretch the Lucifer storyline out over 22 episodes, I think they did an incredible job of keeping every episode relevant to the storyarc and moving things forward. The 22-24-episodes-a-season rule has destroyed many a storyarc for many an American show, but Kripke was awesome at keeping the finish line in sight and making everything that happened in between fit as part of the journey rather than just killing time. In my opinion, anyway. :)
Ohhhh, yeah, that image of Dean in the middle of that graveyard, battered and broken, has to be one of the most gorgeous and heartbreaking shots of the series. :(

Date: 2010-09-07 02:22 am (UTC)This really did feel like the end of the show. I still can't wrap my mind around the idea of there being another season - part of me is excited, and part of me is worried. It just ended so definitely - tragically, but (in some ways) kind of perfectly for how the plot went. I think that Sam and Dean falling together into Hell would have been poetic and sad, but at the same time... as you had pointed out, the show rather led up to Dean being able to let Sam go. And, the ending as it stands reflects the fact that Dean secretly really wanted that normal family and Sam would never have been able to handle it. I feel like having Sam standing outside at the end was the add-on to make it something they could continue. Maybe that's just me though. ;-)
The whole explanation of the Impala is wonderful! That it was there home was always kind of there, but to have it be so explicitly illustrated was sweet and sad and amazing. I love the small details, like the army man or the legos - and that Dean purposely kept them when he rebuilt the car. That, in and of itself, says SO MUCH, and it's beautiful. And then the car being the thing that gave Sam the upper hand over Lucifer... it should be insanely corny, but it KILLS ME, particularly paired with Dean's assurance that he's there and not leaving. ::sobs:: The show really was always about family, and that was all there.
Okay, and back-tracking a bit - I got a bit overexcited there. The goodbye scene is heartbreaking! They made it amazingly tragic - saying goodbye to Bobby really was saying goodbye to his surrogate father, and that hug says a lot; and Castiel actually attempting to lie, ugh! ::squishes them:: It's all so hard for all of them. And the fact that Sam has to go back to doing something that, to him and to Dean makes him a monster is just that one step further.
Which brings us to something that still blows my mind: JUST HOW GOOD OF AN ACTOR JARED PADALECKI IS!! It's kind of insane. My parents actually saw this episode before I did (stupid finals), and my dad's comment was: if that boy doesn't win an award for that, there is a serious problem with television (and i rather agree - so, what is wrong here? haha). But, really - his ability to believably play Sam and Lucifer, and you can tell the difference... it's just impressive. Not to mention, it is insanely creepy. He just does SO WELL as Lucifer, and the scene with the previous demons... wow. Lucifer!Sam is just such a weird mix of psychopathic evil and earnestness, and it's really intense. But the fake-out he pulls on Dean! It's just so awful, especially after all of them putting such complete faith in the plan working- and to lose Sam like that... ouch.
And the ending up back in Kansas! I had remembered reading once that Lawrence (due to the graveyard in Stull) was said to be one of the gates of Hell, and I love that it came full circle. It again makes you wonder just how much each side was playing them from before they were even born! And that they have to go back home for all of this must have just been an extra blow to Dean right there. As if he weren't broken enough at this point! Poor boy seriously deserves a hug.
Really, though - Bobby and Castiel!! UGH!! I was so upset, and I really glad that they got brought back. Plus, Castiel is finally rewarded for his loyalty and goodness! One thing I am looking forward to is seeing him as the new chief in Heaven. I definitely agree by hoping they don't stay away from Bobby too long. AND I WANT TO KNOW WHO GOD IS! Part of me thinks it's Chuck, but there are a lot of things that point away from that as well.
Really, though, it was a wonderful ending, but I am still on the edge of my seat to see what's next. Here's to hoping nothing cheapens it.

Date: 2010-09-07 07:27 pm (UTC)I'm with you there! I'm trying just to think of season 6 as a totally different series springing up from the original, except we get to keep the pretty cast. ;)
And really, no matter what they do in season 6 or beyond, the first 5 seasons are an amazing, cohesive story that nothing can ever destroy. It'll stand alone, like it's a novel in its own right no matter what the sequels turn out to be, you know? I'm looking at season 6 as being the icing on an already delicious cake. If we don't like it, we can always scrape it off and just eat the cake by itself, but in my opinion, even if it sucks like a vacuum it'll still be Jared and Jensen on our screens every week, and there ain't nothin' wrong with that. ;)
I feel like having Sam standing outside at the end was the add-on to make it something they could continue.
Oh, definitely. And Adam falling into the pit didn't just come out of nowhere, so it was definitely something that was planned for a while. I just wonder, since Kripke said he'd had the final moments of the show in his mind from the beginning, whether the original idea was to have them both fall in. He's certainly evil enough to do that to us, heh heh. But then the series did so well that it seemed it could go on past his 5-year plan, so I just wonder if he came up with other ways to end it instead and came up with Jump the Shark for that reason.
Any which way, I do agree that this was the perfect way to end it, and made the entire series come together so well. The journey for Sam was fighting past the evil inside him to do one last, majorly heroic act. The journey for Dean was reaching a point where he trusted Sam beyond the shadow of a doubt to make his own choices and go his own way... and then to let him go forever and still carry on. Even looking back at the pilot, you can see how everything that's happened has been leading to that point, even if the pilot was written long before they knew where the storyline was going. And that, to me, is the sign of a truly great writer - recognizing the foreshadowing in the things you've already written, and threading it all together into a cohesive story.
And then the car being the thing that gave Sam the upper hand over Lucifer... it should be insanely corny, but it KILLS ME, particularly paired with Dean's assurance that he's there and not leaving.
I think the best thing about it was that they LET IT be corny. I can just imagine them in the writers' room trying to figure out a way to avoid a massive chick-flick moment at the end of the storyarc, and finally throwing up their hands and saying, "If we can't avoid it, we might as well make it HUGE." And they did. And it was beautiful. And I don't blame Lucy one bit for finally giving up the fight just to make the slideshow stop. ;)

YESSSSSSS!!! It bugs me so much that these guys are constantly being shut out of the big awards shows, considering there is NOBODY in all of Hollywood who works harder than they do. They have to be Sam and Dean for, what, 14 hours a day, 5 days a week? And they're SO CONSISTENT. Show me a movie star who could pull that off! For goodness' sake, Jared got MARRIED in the middle of shooting an episode (somewhere around Hammer of the Gods or The Devil You Know?), and he STILL brought his A-game to every single scene, and came right back on the Monday morning after to work hard some more. If nothing else, they at least deserve an award for their dedication to their craft.
But who knows, maybe some of the scifi or Teens' Choice awards will give them some recognition this year. IMO, some of those episodes deserve awards for the writing, too, and Changing Channels for the directing, and Mark Pellegrino and Mark A. Sheppard for guest starring... the list could go on and on.

Ohh, really? Heh, that would explain a lot. ;)
