Supernatural 5x18 - Point of No Return
Sep. 3rd, 2010 06:13 pmJust 3 weeks until the season 6 premiere!! Almost there, folks. :D
Episode 100! And well worthy of that distinction, IMO. We'd been waiting a long time for this...
First off, let's talk about Dean's goodbye letter. It's hard to read even in the clearest screencap, since Dean's hands block most of it from the camera, but from what we can see, it was written in three parts - the first part is to Castiel, the second to Bobby, and the third (the one he was still writing) to Sam.
Castiel's section is really blurry and Dean's hand obscures most of it, so I can't tell what he was talking about there. From the partial transcription on supernaturalwiki.com, it seems part of it says "...I'll be surprised if...", "you. But if it does...", "...that what I'm doing isn't...", "...taught us better than that.", "...we've run out of it."
Whatever you can make from that.
Bobby's section is clearer. Dean tells him the Impala is in Cicero, and "I know you'll look after her for me." Then he says Bobby has "taken more for the team" than they could ever ask, which makes him "an honorary Winchester in my book." Aw! Although I'm sure Bobby would have given a snarky comeback upon reading that. :P
Sam's is so very, very sad. Filling in some of the blanks which seem pretty obvious, it says "Sam. You told me once that you pray every day. I'm not sure if that's still true. Probably not. But if it is, give it one last try." The next bit is blocked by his hand, but then we see "Sammy -- one Winchester"... "enough. When it's over..." And that's the line he's still writing. Gah! I want to knooooooow!
Anyway. He sent his leather jacket, car keys, favourite gun, and that letter to Bobby, awwww! That scene is so intensely moving, knowing what each of those items means to Dean. And then Sam shows up, yay! Strangely, Dean didn't hear him picking the lock, heh. But I love love love that Sam knew to check Cicero first. HOW he knew is the great question... because of the dream he spied on 2 years earlier? Maybe Dean mentioned Lisa at some point since then, or said her name in his sleep?
Dean: All you've ever done is run away!
Sam: And I was WRONG. Every single time I did.
I found that exchange really interesting. Dean has always been the first to point out how wrong it was for Sam to run away like that, but he's so defeated at this point that he's even questioning his own philosophy. And Sam has really, truly, honestly learned his lesson. Like I mentioned in an earlier post, there's nothing Sam can SAY to show Dean that he's changed, but the things he DOES in this episode break through loud and clear. But I'm getting ahead of myself.
I love that Dean was expecting a fist fight (and demon blood or no demon blood, dude looked way too defeated to win a fight with Sam), but instead he got Castiel, hahaha! I love Cas SO MUCH in this ep. He just glared at Dean through the whole thing, except for when he was pounding his face in, LOL. He was downright catty with him sometimes, it's hilarious. "Maybe they're moving on from you, Dean" - said with the attitude of "and I understand where they're coming from," heh heh.
And this was also potentially another nod to 2014 - Dean and Cas didn't seem overly close in the future we saw, in fact they seemed to peck at each other any chance they got, and Cas seemed really happy to see the old Dean, the one whose hope was still intact. Makes you wonder, did they fall out like this in that timeline as well? Obviously not for the same reason - although Dean did say he'd tried to say yes, but nothing happened - but it makes me wonder, with Cas in this episode making snide remarks about Dean not being brave or strong, and future!Cas calling Dean "our fearless leader" in kind of a mocking tone.
Bobby's outburst... "Because I promised you I wouldn't give up!" Poor Bobby and his pet bullet. I don't think Dean realized just how much everyone relies on him and his flippant attitude to keep their feet on the ground, you know? He's the glue that keeps Team Awesome together, as evidenced by the way Sam and Bobby both hit rock bottom after his death.
ADAM!! So glad that was readdressed! I love that they established it in Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid that cremation doesn't mean you can't be brought back. Set it up nicely for this episode. And even though they used the Adam thing as a fake-out, thinking Dean would say yes and they wouldn't have to use him, I love that it turns out he's every bit as capable of being Michael's vessel as Dean is. The bloodline for Michael came through John, so I don't think the mother's bloodline really mattered all that much. It was Lucifer's vessel that had to come from Mary, and Sam had to be prepped first to handle him. Uriel was right - Dean could be replaced. Sam couldn't. They clung to the plan for using Dean for as long as they could, since they wanted to keep the older-brother parallel intact, but they did eventually resort to using Adam.
I love the way Bobby stared at Adam and hardly spoke through the whole scene. He's one of John's boys, so by default he's one of Bobby's now, too, and it was like Bobby was searching for signs of John in him, it was cute.
Poor Sam during that whole first scene with Adam - he was trying so hard to reason with the kid, while Cas was being bitchy with Dean, Dean was being snarkier than ever because he didn't even want to be there, and Bobby couldn't even talk, LOL. I love that we got to see Sam being a big bro for real, even though the real Adam was a lot less open to it than the ghoul Adam was. Interesting that Sam told Adam that John was trying to protect him, and that seeing him once a year was better than seeing him all year. I'm not sure how much Sam really believed that anymore, but it was what he thought Adam needed to hear.
Dean's turn to be locked in the panic room. I don't really get why he and Adam weren't locked up together, but I guess then they could have staged a coup, and that would have been bad. Cas slamming the door on him was hilarious, but then it got all heartwrenching with the conversations between the boys. It finally came out - Dean still didn't believe in Sam. He'd tried, but he was always expecting another shoe to fall. And since he'd been seeing so many other facets of 2014 coming true, he figured it was just a matter of time before Sam saying yes came true, too, and he had to say yes to Michael first or the world would be lost in an instant. I do still think that part of Dean felt if he got there first, Michael could kill Lucifer in Nick. Zachariah had told him so more than once. The other part of him, like he said, just believed that Sam couldn't hold out forever. He didn't believe, especially after 5x16, that Sam really felt a connection with him, that they were ever going to be a team. It's just so SAD.
Btw, how sweet is it that Dean put Mom, Dad, Jess, Jo, and Ellen all on a level with each other? Aww!
Dean zapping Cas with that sigil was just SO WRONG. He totally deserved the (insanely awesome) beatdown for that! I kinda wonder why Sam didn't hear Cas' scream, but whatever. I love that Dean went straight for the nearest sidewalk preacher, heh heh. Would have worked, too! I wonder how Cas found him so fast?
Did Cas really consider killing Dean once he had him on the ground? Dean sure thought he did. I bet he at least pictured it in his mind just for kicks, and to let Dean sweat it for a minute. ;)
Meanwhile, Zachariah... the scene at the bar was HILARIOUS, and I love that he compares everything about his job as an angel to... well, to his job in It's a Terrible Life, LOL. And he sure seemed to have fun with Adam. "You're not so much the chosen one as you are... a clammy scrap of bait!" That line was delivered SO PERFECTLY. Kurt Fuller is awesome at playing sleazy bad guys. ;)
I love that the beautiful room wasn't so beautiful after all, LOL. And Cas carving the sigil ON HIMSELF was THE AWESOMEST OF AWESOME THINGS EVER, although it's very sad to know that he was sapped of the last of his angel power because of it.
What's interesting is that, after they caught Dean again, Sam gave him exactly what he himself had wanted in 4x21 when Dean found him in that hotel room - his brother's trust. He knew that if Dean had given him that, he wouldn't have gone through with killing Lilith when Dean had shown up pounding on the door of the convent. So he knew that if he gave that trust to Dean now, Dean wouldn't go through with saying yes when it came right down to it. And he was RIGHT. And Dean could SEE THAT. And they FINALLY got their act together again!!! And it only took them 100 episodes! :P
But the moment when Dean said yes... yeah, he totally meant it. Good thing it wasn't an instantaneous thing. But once he made eye contact with Sam, you could see his thought process written all over his face just as he described it afterwards, it's awesome. "The stupid son of a bitch BROUGHT me here. I just didn't want to let you down." :)
And then Dean FINALLY got to stab Zach in his smug, fat face, woohoo!! I have to say, I'm gonna miss that guy. He was a definite love-to-hate kind of bad guy.
I wonder how much persuasion Adam needed to say yes? Probably not much. He wasn't as up on the reasons not to as Dean was. The main reason he decided his brothers were right about the whole thing was because Zach told him he wasn't going to be Michael's vessel after all, that they'd been lying to him. So yeah, I don't think it would have taken much to convince him he was needed again.
The final scene was absolute perfection. I was GIDDY with joy at seeing our boys be OUR BOYS again. Really, truly, FINALLY a team. And then it all went to hell in a handbasket, heh. But it was definitely fitting to have the 100th episode end on a positive Winchesters-forever moment. :)

Stuart: Let me guess - pink slip?
Zachariah: That obvious, huh?
Stuart: Takes one to know one. "Outsourcing." What was your crime against humanity?
Zachariah: *scoffs* Deal of the millenium. Couldn't even get the one simple "yes" I needed. Gotta nail that bottom line, right?
Stuart: Hear that.
Zachariah: All they care about upstairs, ain't it? Results, results, results. They don't know. They're not down on the ground in the mud, nose to nose with all you pig-filthy humans, am I right?
Stuart: Absolutely. Filthy what?
Zachariah: I mean, whatever happened to personal loyalty? How long have I worked for these guys, 5 millenia? 6?
Stuart: Seems like it, don't it?
Zachariah: Damn straight, it does.
Sam: Sending someone a candygram?
Dean: How'd you find me?
Sam: You're gonna kill yourself, right? It's not too hard to figure out the stops on the farewell tour. How's Lisa doing, anyways?
Dean: I'm not gonna kill myself.
Sam: No? So, Michael's not about to make you his muppet?
Dean: Yeah, no, this is good. Really. Eight months of turned pages and screwed pooches, but tonight... tonight's when the magic happens.
Bobby: You ain't helpin'.
Dean: Yeah, well, why don't you let me get out of your hair, then?
Bobby: That's the round I mean to put through my skull. Every morning I look at it, and I think, "Maybe today's the day I flip the lights out." But I don't do it. I never do it. You know why? BECAUSE I PROMISED YOU I WOULDN'T GIVE UP!
Dean: Oh yeah, that sounds like heaven. Did you get to third base?
Dean: Well, that's insane.
Castiel: Not necessarily.
Dean: How do you mean?
Castiel: Maybe they're movin' on from you, Dean.
Castiel: Maybe they're desperate. Maybe they wrongly assume Dean would be brave enough to withstand them.
Dean: Alright, you know what? Blow me, Cas.
Adam: You know, this has been a really moving family reunion, but uh, I got a thing, so...
Sam: But there's another way.
Adam: Great. What is it?
Dean: Well, we're workin' on the power of love.
Adam: How's that going?
Dean: Mm, not good.
Adam: You know, you pitched this whole dewy-eyed bromance thing, but the truth is I'm on lockdown, aren't I?
Sam: Look, I can't change the past. I wish I could. But from here on out...
Adam: What? We gonna hop in the family truckster? Pop on down to Wally World?
Sam: *shakes head* Tell you one thing, attitude like that... you'd fit right in around here.
Dean: Well, Cas, not for nothing, but the last person who looked at me like that... I got laid.
Bobby: Where's Cas?
Sam: Blown to Oz. Look, I'll get Dean. He couldn't have gone too far, just watch Adam.
Bobby: How? You may have noticed he's got a slight height advantage.
Sam: Then cuff him to your chair.
Zachariah: Didn't we tell you about them?
Adam: *nods*
Zachariah: So you know you can't trust them, right? You know Sam and Dean Winchester are psychotically, irrationally, erotically co-dependent on each other, right?
Adam: I don't know. They said a few things about you.
Zachariah: Really. Trust me, kid, when the heat gets hot, they're not gonna give a flying crap about you. Hell, they'd rather save each other's sweet bacon than save the planet.
Castiel: You pray too loud.
Castiel: *beating Dean to a pulp* I rebelled for this?!?! So that you could surrender to them??
Dean: Cas, please!
Castiel: I gave everything for you! And this is what you give to me?
Sam: Bobby, what do you mean Adam is GONE?
Bobby: Should I say it in Spanish?
Sam: The hell happened to him?
Castiel: Me.
Zachariah: *to Adam* I see you and your brother share the same refined palate.
Zachariah: About that. Look, this is never easy, but I'm afraid we've had to terminate your position at this time.
Adam: Excuse me?
Zachariah: Hey, don't get me wrong, you've been a hell of a sport. Really. *winks* Good stuff. But the thing is, you're not so much the "chosen one" as you are... a clammy scrap of bait. *smiles*
Zachariah: Hey, if it's any consolation, you happen to be the illegitimate half-brother of the guy we do care about. That's not bad, is it?
Adam: So you lied. About everything.
Zachariah: We didn't lie, we just avoided certain truths to manipulate you.
Zachariah: Cool your jets, Corky. Sit down, we're doing it together. Plus, you still get your severance. You still get to see your mom, okay?
Adam: Why should I believe you?
Zachariah: You know what? I keep hearing this... *flaps hand* But what I wanna be hearing is this.
Adam: *coughs up blood*
Zachariah: Yeah. That's better.
Dean: Word to the wise - don't piss off the nerd angels.
Dean: You know, tables were turned, I'd let you rot in here. Hell, I have let you rot in here.
Sam: Yeah, well, I guess I'm not that smart.
Dean: I-I don't get it, Sam. Why are you doing this?
Sam: Because. You're still my big brother.
Dean: The beautiful room is in an abandoned muffler factory in Van Nuys, California?
Castiel: Where'd you think it was?
Dean: I-I don't know, Jupiter? A blade of grass? Not Van Nuys.
Dean: You're gonna take on 5 angels?
Castiel: Yes.
Dean: Isn't that suicide?
Castiel: Maybe it is. But then I won't have to watch you fail.
Dean: There are a few people whose safety you have to guarantee before I say yes.
Zachariah: Sure, fine, make a list.
Dean: But most of all... Michael can't have me until he disintegrates you.
Zachariah: What did you say?
Dean: I said, before Michael gets one piece of this sweet ass, he has to turn you into a piece of charcoal.
Zachariah: *laughs* You really think Michael's gonna go for that?
Dean: Who's more important to him now? You? Or me?
Zachariah: *grabs him* You listen to me. You are nothing but a maggot inside a worm's ass. Do you know who I am? After I deliver you to Michael?
Dean: Expendable.
Zachariah: *laughs* Michael's not gonna kill ME.
Dean: Maybe not. But I am.
Dean: I look over to you, and all I can think about is, "The stupid son of a bitch BROUGHT me here." I just didn't wanna let you down.
Sam: You didn't. You almost did... but you didn't.
Dean: I don't know if it's being a big brother or what, but... to me you've always been this snot-nosed kid that I've had to keep on the straight and narrow. I think we both know that that's not you anymore. I mean, hell, if you're grown up enough to find faith in me, the least I can do is return the favour. So screw destiny. Right in the face. I say we take the fight to them and do it our way.
Sam: Sounds good.
Episode 100! And well worthy of that distinction, IMO. We'd been waiting a long time for this...

Date: 2010-09-05 02:07 am (UTC)I feel bad for Adam - poor kid. I want to smack him as well, but I do feel bad for him. It's also kind of sad because you can see Sam slip back into the big brother mode he had in Adam's original episode, but none of that bonding had been with the real guy, and actual Adam wants nothing to do with them. It's sad. He definitely is a Winchester, though, and therefore they'll look out for him as best they can.
And, poor Bobby. Everything from Dean to just the serious amount of stress they feel the need to put on him at all times. Bobby is awesome all over, though.
The Sam trusting Dean thing makes me insanely happy. A) because it's Sam trusting Dean, and B) because it works. Yay Winchesters! I can't even think of anything better to say about it.
Awesome 100.

And YES to everything else you said! Love this ep. :)
