Ahh, the life of a hunter... tell the truth about your life story to the wrong person, and you end up in the nuthouse. ;)

So, Sam has been worried about Dean since what happened with Jo and Ellen, because he's been burying it instead of dealing with it. Sounds pretty par for the course. Again we get mention of Dean getting only 3 or 4 hours of sleep at a time, and only "every once in a while," but now we hear that this sleep is usually brought on by getting himself smashed. Yeah, that's healthy. Oh Dean. :(

Dean's imaginary shrink asking about his father was pretty self-explanatory, but asking about how many long-term relationships he's had? We know Lisa has been on Dean's mind, but maybe the relationship question came more from Jo dying so recently, just as he seemed to realize she meant a lot to him. Lost opportunity for a long-term relationship there.

When Erica pointed out the weight on Dean's shoulders and asked him how he gets up in the morning, I just thought she was a really sucky psychiatrist, LOL. Nice reveal that she was a hallucination. I sure didn't see it coming.

Sam's first outburst was the "Back off, Dean!" as he was picking the lock into Ted's room. I thought it seemed weird and out of the blue the first time I watched the ep, but now it's clear it was an early clue that something was up. It's so true that Sam has always had anger issues. He channels it into hunting, so it hasn't taken control of him like it would for most people, but it's always simmering away under the surface ready to bubble over at any instigation. Poor guy, his whole life he's had to fight against it.

As I mentioned in an earlier ep review, I found it interesting that Sam was all gung-ho about sawing Ted's head open and checking out his brain. No more squeamish Sam. In fact, he was pretty excited about it! Dean was pretty grossed out, though. ;)

I love that Sam kept his mouth closed when Wendy kissed him, LOL. He looked so freaked out.

"Because you're my brother, and I still love ya." Awww, finally one of them says it! Under the influence of some pretty heavy-duty drugs, but it was still said. And coming from Sam, too, which... even though he's generally seen as being more in touch with his feminine side like that, he never says mushy stuff to Dean or makes overtly emotional or touchy-feely gestures (except for that one hug in Mystery Spot, after Dean had been dead for 6 months), and it's usually Dean we hear about their "I'd die for him" bond from. Sam usually tries to act all the tougher around Dean, because he knows he'll just be mocked or smacked around if he gets too "feelings-y" for Dean's taste. So it was nice to hear Sam say it, even if it was played for laughs.

Speaking of that scene being played for laughs, how ENDLESSLY HILARIOUS was the "BOOP!" thing? Hahahahahaha!!!

You know, that shrink kinda sucked for putting thoughts like "barely even human" and "like a man possessed" into the mind of a mentally ill man with religious psychosis. Sam's "I know" when he said that was just heartbreaking. He's so used to being "barely human" by this point. It's his lot in life. It's just generally not civilians who notice it. :(

Martin was so sweet. Gotta wonder what happened to him to make him crack like that. But he came through in the end! He must have gotten into trouble over Wendy, too, poor guy.

And after killing a nurse and escaping, you'd think the Winchesters would be in some serious hot water with the authorities again, too. There's no way their descriptions and prints wouldn't have been given to the FBI after that, so the FBI would totally know they're still alive by now. Please be a season 6 storyline? Pleeeeeease??

*sigh* Those broken boys. The saddest part is that they KNOW how broken they are. They just have to keep on going anyway. Sam knowing his anger is tearing him apart, Dean knowing that bottling everything up will eventually drive him crazy... what can they do about it? Nothing. Gah! Sam did try to work on his anger management after this ep, though, I think. Even though he's attacked on every side over it in the days to come. Oh, boys. :(

Randomness -
*I'm pretty sure the girl who played Wendy was also the flirty girl in the jewelry store in Nightshifter.

Quotes -

Dr. Fuller: You were referred to me by a Dr. Babar in Chicago.
Dean: That's right.
Dr. Fuller: Isn't there a children's book about an elephant named Babar?
Dean: I don't know. I don't have any elephant books.

Dr. Fuller: Oh, you mean like a... like an angel on your shoulder.
Sam: No, no, his name's Castiel. He wears a trenchcoat.

Dean: My brother's not evil. He was just... high.

Dean: Alright, look, Nurse Ratched, let's get one thing straight. I've seen Cuckoo's Nest, so don't try any of that soul-crushing, authoritarian crap on me, hmm?
Nurse: Okee dokee.

Dean: How was your Silkwood shower?
Sasm: Okay. Yeah. Good, yeah, good um... good water pressure. Did the nurse...
Dean: She was very thorough.
Sam: Yeah. Yeah, good. Good, yeah.

Dean: Oh, come on, Sam, stop. Look, just because we're in the loony bin doesn't give you the right to head-shrink me.

Martin: Sam, Dean, wow! Wow, you boys got big!

Dr. Fuller: Well, to be frank, uh, the relationship that you have with your brother seems dangerously co-dependent. I think a little time apart would do you both good.

Dr. Fuller: Ted, we're not going to have that discussion again. It's not good for group.
Ted: I agree. You know what else isn't good for group? A monster eating all our faces off!

Dean: You're my shrink? *smiles* Lucky me.
Erica: And you're my paranoid schizophrenic with narcissistic personality disorder and religious psychosis. Lucky me.

Sam: You okay?
Dean: I just got thraped. So no, I am not okay.

Dean: *after Wendy's kiss* Maybe this place isn't so bad after all.
Sam: Dude. You CANNOT hit that.
Dean: Huh? Oh, so torn...

Sam: Look! His brain's been sucked dry!

Dean: Pudding!!

Dean: What are those, original Gacys?
Martin: I painted those.

Erica: Why do you have to hunt monsters? Why not let someone else do it?
Dean: Can't find anybody else that dumb.

Wendy: *after kissing Sam* I want him now. He's larger. *walks off*
Dean: *to Sam* Hmm. You've had worse.

Dean: Are you okay?
Sam: No. No, I'm not okay. I-I-I... I am AWESOME.
Dean: They gave you something?
Sam: Oh yeah, they, they gave me EVERYTHING. I-it's spectacu-lacular. *laughs*
Dean: You always were a happy drunk.

Sam: Maybe, may-maybe, maybe you're going crazy.
Dean: I'm not crazy.
Sam: Well, come on, I mean, you've been at least HALF crazy for a long time. Since you got back from Hell or since before that, even. I mean, we're in a... we're in a mental hospital. *laughs* May-maybe, maybe you've finally cracked! You know, maybe, maybe now you are really, for-real CRAZY.

Sam: Hey, look at me. It's okay. 'Cause you're my brother. And I still love ya. *tweaks his nose* BOOP!

Erica: You got Ellen and Jo killed. You shot Lucifer, but you couldn't gank him. You couldn't stop Sam from killing Lilith, and oh yeah, you broke the first seal. All you do is fail. Did you really think that you, Dean Winchester, with a GED and a give-'em-hell attitude, were gonna beat the devil? Please. The world is gonna burn, and there is nothing that you can do about it.

Martin: You look like hell, boy.
Dean: I-I feel like it, too.
Martin: Where's Sam?
Dean: Locked down! He went crazy, thank God.
Martin: What?
Dean: I'm goin' crazy, too. I'm seein' things, I'm hearin' things, we both are. Crazy is the clue.
Martin: What do you mean?
Dean: *distracted*
Martin: *snaps fingers* Dean!
Dean: Crazy is the clue.
Martin: You said that. What?
Dean: I mean, the things that me and Sam have done, the, the, the stuff that we've seen, we're gonna end up going guano eventually. *laughs* Probably end up like a couple of drooling nutbags. No offense.
Martin: None taken.
Dean: But me and him freaking out on the same day? I mean, it's gotta be...
Martin: The monster.
Dean: What, where?! Where?!

Dean: I can't step on the cracks.

Nurse: I gotta say, you hunters don't exactly live up to your rep. I mean, Martin's a wreck, he's harmless. And you and your brother come in here talkin' tough about killing monsters? Kinda made you easy to spot.

Sam: YOU did this to me!!
Nurse: Well, I helped. But that rage? No, no, no, no. That's all you. I don't make crazy, I just crank up what's already there. You build your own hell, but I give you the Legos. And when you're ripe, I make all of your problems disappear.

Nurse: Do you really think this is gonna end well for you, kiddo?
Dean: No. But I'm crazy, so what the hell?

Sam: Are you still crazy?
Dean: Not any more than usual.

Dean: Well, looks like Tom Cruise was right. Shrinks suck.

Dean: You're gonna take all that crap, and you're gonna bury it. You're gonna forget about it. Because that's how we keep going. That's how we don't end up like Martin. Are you with me? Come on, man, are you with me?
*pause*
Sam: I'm with you.

I love this episode!!

Sam's anger issues really are something that you see the whole way through, but it's also something that you can kind of understand. I mean, with everything that happens to them over their lives, and then the way Winchesters are so good at bottling things up and letting them fester... Really, though, Sam agreeing that he's so full of anger as to be barely human... :-( And, when you go back and rewatch - you can definitely see that the anger builds throughout the whole show. They did not just suddenly give him rage issues.

I love how subtle this episode is in having the boys both slowly go crazy with the amplification of issues they already have. It's done really well, and once it's been revealed it's sad.

Exactly. Everything that happens in season 5 has a basis in the previous seasons. Nothing ever comes out of nowhere. Absolutely perfect storytelling.

And I agree that his anger issues are understandable. It just goes to show how strong he is that it hasn't taken control of him completely.

Yes! You don't notice it on first watching the episode, but upon rewatch you can see that it starts on them slowly as soon as they enter that hospital. It's so well done!
