Very clever title, referencing the age-old philosophical question "How many angels can dance on the head of a pin?" I'd love to go into all the reasons why this title was so cool for this particular episode on so many different levels, but that would take a while. :P

First I have to mention how MAD I am that they cut the first Dean & Cas scene to shreds. There was SO MUCH IMPORTANT DIALOGUE in there that ended up on the cutting room floor. I can never watch this episode now without being miffed about that.

Here are the sections of the scene that were cut out, as seen on the DVD deleted scene -

Dean: I want to talk to Cas alone.
Uriel: Really.
Dean: If you want a snowball's chance of me going in there, then you're gonna shag ass and let us talk.
Uriel: I think I'll go seek revelation. We might have some further orders.
Dean: Well, get some donuts while you're out.
Uriel: *turns to go*
Dean: Jelly.
Uriel: *laughs, comes back, looks down at his hand like he's considering smiting, shakes his head and smiles* This one just won't quit, will he? *laughs* Heaven help us. I think I'm starting to like you, boy.

Castiel: I was getting too close to the humans in my charge. You. Even to your brother.
(WHYYYYYY did they cut that ONE TINY SENTENCE out of there?!?! I'd been dying all season for Cas to show some fondness for Sam. Gah!)

Dean: So they knock you down the ladder, and they put Uriel in charge?
Castiel: He is a proud and able instrument of God.
Dean: The demotion, doesn't it get your loincloth in a twist?
Castiel: It is what it is to me. (I think that's what he said... his voice is really quiet.)
Dean: Well, tell Uriel or whoever... you do not want me doing this, trust me.
Castiel: Want it, no. But I've been told we need it.
Dean: Cas, the things that I did... what I became... you ask me to open that door and walk through it, you will not like what walks back out.
Castiel: You know what we're all fighting for. What Pamela lost her life for. You know what will happen if we fail.
Dean: *closes his eyes*
Castiel: For what it's worth, I would give anything not to have you do this.
Dean: *opens eyes, pauses a long moment* I'll need a few things.

Again, whyyyyy did they cut out half of Dean's deliberation over torturing Alastair? Now that I've seen it this way, it always seems in the episode like he gave in way too fast. He NEEDED Cas' words about Pamela in order to be convinced. Usually I can see why they cut out the scenes they do, but this time it just makes me angry. I could live without the extended Uriel stuff, but the rest of the scene needed to stay intact. It was SO much better.

But moving onto the actual episode... they packed SO MUCH IN, it's unbelievable.

First of all, the crane shot of the wings burned into the ground was AWESOME. Whoever came up with the idea for that deserves a round of applause. I love that we never see their actual wings, just their shadow or outline. Makes them so much cooler.

Something I don't quite understand - the angel sword thing. Nowadays it seems that every angel carries one around, yet at this point nobody recognized the wound it made, so... I'm confused. In the articles and things about this episode from the time it aired, it talks about the sword like it's the only one of its kind. Maybe they made more after this? Maybe it's only the rebellious angels who would carry one around and kill their kin?

I liked seeing that Sam was working openly with Ruby now, and that Dean kind of accepted it while still having a reluctant attitude about it. And they were wearing black for Pamela's funeral. *sniffle* I'm tired of them losing friends, too. :(

Dean was tired, Sam was angry. That just about sums it up, doesn't it?

I love how interested Dean looked when he asked how the angels were being killed, heh heh. He was looking for pointers. ;)

I don't really understand why they thought Dean would be able to torture the truth out of Al. First of all, Al LOVES pain and blood. And second of all... AL LOVES PAIN AND BLOOD. Seriously. They should have put him in a frilly pink room and made him watch kittens playing and sunbeams dancing, surrounded him with lollipops, had bubbles floating in the air around him, rainbows sparkling on the walls... do you get the picture I'm painting here? THAT would be hell for Alastair. He would have sung like a canary then just to make it stop. :P

Sam's "DAMMIT!" came from his TOES, I love it. ;)

Anyway. Al's creepy pause on the word "pokes" and Dean raising his eyes at that moment makes me wonder about rape. Which makes the whole dynamic between Dean and Al all the more disturbing. Poor Dean, all the taunting... and bringing up John, ouch. Those scenes were so hard to watch for so many reasons.

Ruby controlling fire was AWESOME. And the whole blood-drinking scene... *shudders* I wish I hadn't been spoiled for it ahead of time, because I'd love to have felt the shock of that moment IN the moment, but it was an awesomely disturbing scene, and I loved it. Just the way she climbed onto his lap, reassured him, kissed him, and then cradled and rocked him while he drank... like, SERIOUSLY?! It was all just so wrong, LOL. She was like lover and mother all in one. Icky! And Sam was like a puppy getting a treat as she drew her knife, and gave her one last little "Really? For ME?" look before digging in. Maaaaan... I loved those two and their twisted-and-screwed-up-ness. :P

And speaking of my OTPs... Castiel/Anna! Their scenes were so awesome. I love how bonded they seemed to be, and how much Cas seemed to hate that they were. She comes to him to help, and he sends her away. He summons her for "orders" even though he considers her a walking blasphemy, and she tells him to think for himself. I love iiiiit. If only we'd had more episodes like this one before she was shipped off to prison. *sigh*

Did you notice Sam's eyes going partly black while he was driving? I totally missed it when I watched on TV, but it was definitely there. Nice touch, showing how close Sam was to totally crossing the line.

The reveal that Dean broke the first seal and that it was supposed to be John who had done it - for a while that didn't seem to make sense, but in the light of how Swan Song went down, I think it did. The first seal didn't need to be broken by Michael's vessel. If John had broken it, he would have been tied into the whole situation more but would have just been left in Hell instead of brought back like Dean was. The reason they went back for Dean was because Michael needed him, but they needed it to look like there was another reason for it. I don't think Cas knew it was all a lie - he was being fed the same crap the boys were, because the angels knew the boys trusted him and would believe what he told them.

As for the righteous man thing, I think that just meant someone who was in Hell but not because they deserved it. Hunters are fighting on the side of good, and therefore are more or less Heaven's warriors. So when a hunter sells his soul to save another's life, that's a pretty huge sacrifice from someone who deserves some of the best real estate Heaven has to offer. So yeah, it would have worked if John had broken the seal, and it worked when Dean did. They were about as righteous as Hell gets.

Sam's first kill... Cas was so horrified, I love it. And it actually looked like Sam felt GOOD while he was doing it. He's gone beyond the "no more headaches!" thing from Metamorphosis. Now he's getting a nice ole buzz.

Love love love the scene between Sam and Cas in the hospital. "Miracle. NOW." That's my boy, ordering angels around, heh. It was good to see Sam so out of his mind with worry about Dean. But there again, it's like he's trying to be the big brother and protect him. That is so not what Dean wants.

Cas: I'm considering disobedience.
Anna: Good.
Cas: No. It isn't.

That RIGHT THERE is why I adore Castiel. I LOVE that about him - he's not a rebellious angel, he doesn't want to become human, he's what angels SHOULD BE. He's loyal to God no matter what. The only orders he questions are the ones that go against what God has taught them. That's why his crisis of faith in season 5 brought him so low, and I think it's why God has brought him back from the dead twice now. He's the only truly devoted angel we've met. I'd like to think there are more out there, but Uriel killed a bunch, so maybe not.

Cas vs Uriel, bro vs bro. Yet another Michael vs Lucifer analogy?

Uriel didn't seem to be on the same team as Zach. He wanted Lucifer alive and well, not to rise and then be killed. I wonder where his pals are, the angels he'd already "converted"? Were they found out and imprisoned? Are they still around somewhere? Hmm.

Anna killing Uriel was AWESOME. "Maybe. Maybe not. But there's still ME." Woohoo!

I do believe that Cas healed Dean after he found out it was Uriel's will and not God's that broke Al out. But I don't think he healed him all the way, so as not to draw attention.

That final scene was so heartwrenching. Dean's despondency was now complete. "I guess I'm not the man either of our dads wanted me to be." Oh, Dean. :(

Quotes -

Dean: I'm just, I'm just gettin' tired.
Sam: Well, get angry.

Dean: Ah, home crappy home.

Uriel: You are needed.
Dean: Needed? We just got back from needed!

Dean: Well, get some donuts while you're out.
Uriel: *laughs* Oh, this one just won't quit, will he? I think I'm starting to like you, boy. *disappears*
Dean: You guys don't walk enough. You're gonna get flabby.

Castiel: Uriel's the funniest angel in the garrison. Ask anyone.

Alastair: You think I'll see all your scary toys and spill my guts?
Dean: Oh, you'll spill your guts one way or another. I just didn't want to ruin my shoes.

Ruby: Not sure I see the problem. You know, they have Alastair strung up six ways from Sunday. Dean cuts himself a slice, Al's reduced to a quivering heap, and the good guys get the goods. What's wrong with that?

Alastair: Damned if I couldn't break him. Pulled out all the stops, but John, he was, well, made of something unique. Stuff of heroes. And then came Dean, oh, Dean Winchester, I thought I was up against it again. But, daddy's little girl! He broke. He broke in 30. Just not the man your daddy wanted you to be, huh, Dean?

Alastair: Holy water? Come ON! Grasshopper, you're gonna have to get creative to impress me!
Dean: You know something, Alastair? I could still dream, even in Hell, and over and over and over, you know what I dreamt? I dreamt of this moment. And believe me... I got a few ideas.

Alastair: Go directly to Hell. Do not pass Go, do not collect $200.

Ruby: Relax, the fire is our friend.

Sam: Ruby, it's been weeks. I need it.
Ruby: You don't seem too happy about it.
Sam: You think I wanna do this? This is the last thing I... *sits down, sighs* But I need to be strong enough.
Ruby: *climbs onto his lap* It's okay. It's okay, Sammy. You can have it.

Castiel: You shouldn't be here. We still have orders to kill you.
Anna: Somehow, I don't think you'll try.

Anna: What you're feeling? It's called doubt. *touches his hand* These orders are wrong, and you know it. But you can do the right thing. You're afraid, Cas. I was, too. But together, we can st...
Castiel: Together? *throws her hand away* I am nothing like you. You fell! Go.
Anna: Cas.
Castiel: Go!

Alastair: 'S something caught in my throat. I think it's my throat.
Dean: Hm. Well, strap in, 'cause I'm just startin' to have fun.

Alastair: You've got a lot to learn, boy. So I'll see you back in class, bright and early, Monday morning!

Alastair: Looks like God is on my side today.

Alastair: Oh, go ahead and send me back. If you can.
Sam: I'm stronger than that now. Now I can kill.

Sam: Get in there and heal him.
Castiel: *stares*
Sam: Miracle. NOW.
Castiel: I can't.
Sam: You and Uriel PUT him in there...
Castiel: No.
Sam: ...because you can't keep a simple devil's trap together!

Castiel: I'm considering disobedience.
Anna: Good.
Castiel: No. It isn't.

Castiel: Anna. I don't know what to do. Please tell me what to do.
Anna: Like the old days. No. I'm sorry. It's time to think for yourself.

Castiel: Strange. Strange how a leaky pipe can undo the work of angels, when we ourselves are supposed to be the agents of fate.

Castiel: You can't win, Uriel. I still serve God.
Uriel: You haven't even met the man! There is no will. *punches him* No wrath. *punches him* No God!
Anna: *stabs him* Maybe. Maybe not. But there's still ME.

Castiel: Are you alright?
Dean: No thanks to you.
Castiel: You need to be more careful.
Dean: You need to learn how to manage a damn devil's trap.

Castiel: It's not blame that falls on you, Dean. It's fate. The righteous man who begins it is the only one who can finish it. You have to stop it.
Dean: Lucifer? The apocalypse? What does that mean?
Castiel: *no response*
Dean: Hey. Don't you go disappearing on me, you son of a bitch. What does that mean?
Castiel: I don't know.
Dean: Bull!
Castiel: I don't. Dean, they don't tell me much. I know our fate rests with you.
Dean: Well, then you guys are screwed. I can't do it, Cas. It's too big. Alastair was right. I'm not all here, I'm not stro...I'm not strong enough. Well I guess I'm not the man either of our dads wanted me to be. Find someone else. It's not me.

This episode blew my mind when it first aired. My dad and I always laugh that when you first start watching this show, it seems amazingly dark and twisty (but still quite fun), and then you get deeper into it and find yourself looking back to the 'lighter days' with fondness. This episode just kind of embodies that growing sense of darkness, and all the grey areas brought with it, for me - both with Dean and with Sam (and, for that matter, even with Castiel). It's just so well done. You can see how situations are just bashing down the faith all of them have in everything, and how messed up a place they're in.

And, really, angels having someone torture a demon? That threw me for a loop the first time, and it still does. Now, I definitely agree with you that Alastair would have been far more tortured if they did the opposite of torturing him, but hey - Uriel is a wee bit on the scary-twisted side himself. Poor Dean! Both for the situation they put him in, and everything that comes out of it. Poor Castiel, for having to be involved and where that puts him. And poor Sam, because he is one seriously messed up dude at this point - this episode just expands on how very twisted he and Ruby are.

The writers really managed something with this that was surprisingly powerful. They're good at that, especially given the people they have to pull it off.

edit: And this -

That RIGHT THERE is why I adore Castiel. I LOVE that about him - he's not a rebellious angel, he doesn't want to become human, he's what angels SHOULD BE. He's loyal to God no matter what. The only orders he questions are the ones that go against what God has taught them.

Is so very, very true about what makes him awesome, and why his "I fell for you" beating up Dean scene actually rather makes me cheer (sorry there Dean).
