This was the last episode that Kim Manners ever directed. He went out on a high note, that's for sure. There are so many moments in this episode that blow you away, which just goes to show how much talent this guy had. He died way too soon. :(

"Tell me about those months without your brother. About all the things you and this demon bitch do in the dark. Tell me, hero." You know, sometimes I wonder if we even know the half of it.

Dean seeing Sam's powers for the first time. GUT-WRENCHING. He must have been wondering if he'd ever really known Sam at all. Their confrontations in this ep were absolute perfection. The motel scene especially, but also the scene on the roadside. Gold from start to finish, both of them. And the fight between Dean and Ruby, cut short by a word from Sam that Ruby quickly obeyed... "Well, aren't you an obedient little bitch?" Best way to get Sam to do what she wanted, and she knew it.

"I'm just exorcising demons." Just? Really, Sam?? He was so deeply in denial and making so many excuses that I really don't think he was fully comprehending what the heck he was doing.

"I'm not gonna let it go too far." "It's already gone too far, Sam." Er, no kidding. And it's gonna go a heck of a lot farther.

"If I didn't know you, I would want to hunt you." Biggest ouch ever. And Sam finding out that Heaven, who he'd been praying to all his life, was against what he was doing... that's when it started to break through to him, I think. But still he kept on making excuses for himself through the rest of the episode. He started to see Jack as an extension of himself, like he felt that if Jack could resist the evil inside him, so could Sam. No such luck. Makes the ending all the more foreshadowing - the time will come when he just can't turn back. Jack crossed the line to save his wife, and Sam will cross the line to (he thinks) save the world.

"We're not gonna kill him unless he does something to get killed FOR." I always think he said that so pointedly at Dean because he was worried Dean might finally make good on the promise he made to John and Sam. Sam was turning into something he shouldn't be turning into. This was what John had warned them about, and what Dean was supposed to prevent.

"Nice dude, but he's got something evil inside him. Something in his blood. Maybe you can relate." Kind of poking a sore wound there, Dean, thanks. :P

"The way you talk to me, the way you look at me, like I'm a freak! You know, or even worse, like I'm an idiot, like I don't know the difference between right and wrong!" "Do you know the difference, Sam? I mean, you've been kinda strolling a dark road lately." I really think the line had been blurred considerably by this point, yeah.

"I've got demon blood in me, Dean! This disease pumping through my veins, and I can't ever rip it out or scrub it clean. I'm a whole new level of freak! And I'm just trying to take this... this curse... and make something good out of it. Because I have to." - Sam in a nutshell right there. It was at this point in the episode that I was clapping and cheering and screaming, "It's about time!!!" We FINALLY got to see what was going on in Sam's head.

And the closet scene... "You have this dark pit inside you, I know. Believe me, I know. But that doesn't mean you have to fall into it. You don't have to be a monster." and "It doesn't matter what you are. It only matters what you do." I bet Sam had repeated those mantras to himself a thousand times.

And finally - "These powers... it's playing with fire. I'm done with them. I'm done with everything." This was when he quit drinking the blood for the first time. We didn't see him go through withdrawal, so he wasn't too far gone yet at this point. He probably wasn't even addicted to it yet. Which is probably why he thought he would be okay going back to it later.

You know, I was so sad that Sam didn't get to go back in time and meet his mom, but his reactions in The Song Remains the Same totally made up for the delay. I'd love to know what all Dean left out of his recap, if there was anything besides the demon blood that he didn't mention. These boys are experts at not telling the whole truth, after all. ;)

I love Ron Lea, who played Travis. Awesome actor. Travis was a little bit stupid, though. Wouldn't the wife have aborted the baby anyway once she realized her husband was a monster? I kind of pictured that being her first step once she drove off.

Two of the best scenes in the history of anything -

Motel confrontation - here
Roadside argument - here

Randomness -
*Jack was disgusting. 'Nuff said. :P
*Sam was a mathlete! D'aww. :)
*Never get naked while standing at an open window, ladies. Never know when there's a rugaru out in the street looking for someone appetizing to munch on, ya know?

Quotes -

Dean: The hell do you think you're going?
Ruby: The ER. Unless you want to go another round first.

Dean: Alright, well, I've seen big weird, little weird, weird with crazy on top, but this guy? Come on, this guy's boring.
*they watch him chow down on raw meat*
*pause*
Sam: I'd say that qualifies as weird.

Travis: *to Sam* Man, you got tall, kid!

Travis: You still a... what was it, a mathlete?
Sam: *laughs* No.
Dean: Yep, sure is.

Dean: A rugaru? Is that made up? That sounds made up.

Dean: Long pig?
Sam: He means human flesh.
Dean: And that is my word of the day.

Dean: Sam loves research. He does. I mean, he keeps it under his mattress right next to his KY. It's a sickness. It is.

Dean: So, what, go vegan, stay human?

Travis: What's up with your brother?
Dean: Don't get me started.

*Sam and Dean burst into woman's apartment, woman starts screaming*
Dean: Hey! Uh, we're here to.. save you, I guess.
Woman: I'm calling the police!!
Sam: We should go.
Dean: Yeah.
