Dean: For all we know, she works for Lilith!

Ding-ding-ding! Somebody give this guy a prize. :P

Was this ep excellent, or was this ep excellent? Right from the Wayward Son recap, to the opening scene with Dean's nightmare, to the closing scene of Sam sobbing over his torn-up corpse and the shot through the eye showing Dean in Hell. Absolutely magnificent. They had to make Dean's death uber-traumatic after all the lead-up to it, and I think they pulled it off. I still can't bear to watch. :(

I really love the way they deal with the hellhounds on this show. The hellhound POV shots are SO CREEPY, and I don't know how they made it look like Dean was getting ripped to shreds by an unseen animal, but it was 100% believable, and that couldn't have been easy to accomplish. Also, I love that Dean went through the same thing as the people in Crossroad Blues - the hallucinations and everything. And seeing demons' true faces was a nice touch.

You know, Ruby technically didn't lie - Sam COULD have stopped Lilith before she had a chance to collect on Dean's soul, and Ruby DID want Lilith dead... just not yet. I wonder now, though, what would have happened if Sam and Ruby hadn't been interrupted in that cellar. Would Ruby have fed him demon blood right there and then? He wouldn't have been able to reach a point where he could kill Lilith that fast, but it would have kick-started his training for when Dean was gone. The way it ended up happening, it took Sam so long to get anywhere that Ruby seemed to lose patience with him sometimes. I bet they were planning on it happening a whole lot faster. She was sure pressing all the right buttons before Dean showed up. And Sam's pride was already kicking in, feeling that he could handle whatever Ruby wanted him to do and that he could resist going darkside. Oh, Sam. :(

And while I'm on the subject of Ruby, I loved the scenes with her and the boys in this ep. I wish we'd gotten to see more of the three of them together in season 3. They made such a reluctant and motley yet awesome team, I love it. Although I still don't get why Sam and Ruby split up when they only had one demon-killing weapon between them. That must have been when Lilith took over Ruby's body, but why did Sam think it was a good idea to separate?

Anyway. That kid playing Lilith totally freaks me out, LOL. I've seen her in other stuff since then where she's all cute and innocent, but I can't see her as anything but evil. :P

Bobby and Bobby alone could tamper with the Impala and live to tell about it, LOL. Have I mentioned lately how awesome this guy is? Because he's awesome. I love that he knew they would try to leave without him, and there was no way he was gonna let them. Family don't end with blood, boys! That rocked. And the sprinklers!!!

I honestly hope Sam has held it over Dean's head at some point that the last band he wanted to hear before he died was BON JOVI. Because he deserves that. :P That scene was so adorable, though. Sam got so into it! And that was what Dean wanted, I think - to get Sam to forget what was coming, even for just a brief moment.

Sam gearing up to knife the little girl was SO INTENSE. He was gonna do it, too. In I Believe the Children Are Our Future, when Sam says they don't kill children and Cas reminds him that "a year ago" he would have done whatever it took, I always think Sam flashed back to this moment. He did hesitate, though, just as Castiel did over Jesse. I'm glad Lilith was in an adult when they finally did kill her. Not that kiling an innocent adult is any better, but it looks slightly less horrific somehow. Which is probably why Lilith switched to an adult host at the end - after this trial run, she'd know Sam would hesitate to kill a child, and she wanted to lift any potential hindrances so he would be sure to go through with it.

I always feel so bad for the little girl's mother. She has to live with guilt for the rest of her life now for wanting her child to be stabbed to death. Ouch.

The boys' last goodbye... ohhhhh man, that could not have been written or performed better than that. It was such an emotional moment, yet they weren't all mushy and sobby all over each other, you know? It was so in character, especially when Dean told Sam to look after his wheels, and Sam kinda rolled his eyes, LOL. So cute. And when Sam said "What am I supposed to do?" I always wonder if Dean recognized those words. He had to know what Sam was feeling in that moment. :(

And once again, Sam's powers come out via adrenaline as he sees something horrible happen to Dean. And I bet for the next 4 months he was constantly kicking himself for not making it happen just one minute sooner. Poor guy, it had been such a long, hard year, and he had failed. And knowing now what that summer was like for him... *cries* Oh Saaaaaaaam!

And the final shot of Dean in Hell just HURT. Calling for Sam like that? Gah! I bet he thought Sam was dead, too. :(

That was one looooooong summer hiatus, wasn't it? "Hellatus" really fit that time. :P

Clips! -
*The singing!
*The goodbye scene. *sniffle*
*And the post-3x16 vid I loved the most - Running Up That Hill, by meimei42.

Randomness -
*It's hard to catch, but when Dean is waking up from his nightmare, there's a single frame of dead!Dean from the end of the episode thrown in there somewhere. Sneaky.
*Jensen's voice was so hoarse in parts of the ep. It fit Dean's emotional state, so it doesn't take you out of the moment or anything, but man... just shows how exhausting this ep was for Jensen. As potentially evidenced by this behind-the-scenes picture. It looks like he's bracing himself for the death scene there, doesn't it? Poor guy.
*Does Sam's "Eye of the Tiger" comment count as foreshadow? :P
*The number on the top of the police car they hid? 54. As in "Car 54, Where Are You?" Cute. :P
*I remember people debated for a while what the bedtime story was all about, but I guess now we know - children were being sacrificed to the dragon... Lilith drank baby blood. She just enjoyed the imagery there. Sick chick.

Quotes -

Dean: Why don't we just make a TJ run, huh? You know, some senoritas, cervezas, we could... what's Spanish for donkey show?
Sam: So, if we do save you... let's never do that.

Dean: We're goin' off of Bela's intel? Now when that bitch BREATHES the air comes out crooked.

Bobby: Ain't you just bringin' down the room?
Dean: Yeah, well, it's a gift.

Sam: Okay, fine, if that's the case, I have the answer.
Dean: You do?
Sam: Yeah, a sure-fire way to confirm it's Lilith, and a way to get us a bona fide demon-killing Ginsu.

Ruby: *appears out of nowhere* You know, phones work, too. Hey, Sam. How's tricks?
Sam: How do you get around so fast?
Ruby: I got the Super Bowl jet pack.

Ruby: She's on shore leave. A little R&R.
Sam: The hell's that mean?
Ruby: Trust me, you don't wanna know.

Ruby: You want to charge in with one little pig-sticker? It's a waste of a true blue window, like hitting Hitler with that exploding briefcase. Forget it.

Ruby: Sam, you've got some God-given talent. Well, not God-given, but you get the gist.

Ruby: Um, demon? Manipulative's kind of in the job description.

Dean: So, that's you, huh? Our slutty little Yoda.
Ruby: Dean. Charming as ever.

Dean: She wants you to give into this whole demonic psychic whatever, okay? I mean, hell, she probably wants you to become her little Antichrist Superstar.

Ruby: Oh, so you're just too stupid to live, is that it? Then fine. You deserve Hell. And I wish I could be there, Dean. I wish I could smell the flesh sizzle off your bones. I wish I could be there to hear you SCREAM!
Dean: And I wish you'd shut your piehole, but we don't always get what we want.

Dean: What, are you gonna give her the Carrie stare and Lilith goes poof?

Sam: I think you totally should have been jammin' Eye of the Tiger right there.
Dean: Oh, bite me. You know, I totally rehearsed that speech, too.

Bobby: Do I look like a ditchable prom date to you?

Dean: This is about me and Sam, okay? This isn't your fight.
Bobby: The hell it isn't! Family don't end with blood, boy.

Bobby: I'll follow. Don't be stoppin' to pee every 10 minutes either.

Dean: You're not gonna bust out the misty goodbye speech, okay? I mean, if this is my last day on Earth, I do not want it to be socially awkward. You know what I do want... *turns on car stereo, Bon Jovi's Dead Or Alive*
Sam: Bon Jovi?
Dean: Bon Jovi rocks. On occasion.

Bobby: You're piercin' the veil, Dean. Glimpsin' the B-side.
Dean: Little less new-agey, please.
Bobby: You're almost Hell's bitch. So, you can see Hell's other bitches.
Dean: Thank you.

Dean: Well, I'm glad my doomed soul's good for something.

Dean: Well, this is a terrific plan. I'm excited to be a part of it.

Ruby: I'd like my knife back, please. Or your neck snaps like a chicken bone.

Ruby: What you don't know about me could fill a book.
Dean: Whoa. *stares, grossed out*
Ruby: What?
Dean: Nothing. I just, I couldn't see before, but you are one UGLY broad.

Sam: Try and stop me, and I'll kill you, bitch.
Ruby: Hit me with your best shot, baby.
Dean: Guys, guys! Hey. Have your little cat fight later.

Sam: Then what am I supposed to do?
Dean: Keep fightin'. Take care of my wheels. Sam, remember what Dad taught you. Okay? And remember what I taught you.

Dean: How long have you been in her?
Lilith: Not long. But I like it. It's all grown up and pretty.
Sam: Then where's Ruby?
Lilith: She was a very bad girl, so I sent her far, far away.
Dean: You know, I should have seen it before, but you all look alike to me.

Sam: Alright, so you have me. Let my brother go.
Lilith: Silly goose. You want to bargain, you have to have something that I want. *tuts* You don't.
Dean: So, is this your big plan, huh? Drag me to Hell, kill Sam, and then what? Become Queen Bitch?
Lilith: I don't have to answer to puppy chow. *opens door* Sic 'im, boy.

This is one of the episodes I look forward to rewatching with hindsight knowledge in tact.

But man. Dean was so right about Ruby. He does have tendency to have a good sense about people, in general. Too bad it all tends to get lost in his own self-worthlessness.

Sooooo much awesomer in hindsight. :)

That's true, he does. Unless he's too close to the situation, which is when Sam seems to have a good sense of what's going on (Gordon, for instance). They really need to start listening to each other!

It's one of the things I love about Dean and noticed more and more as I've watched the series. I'm like, darn. You just read people so well when it comes to base nature. Though, he often assumes the details wrong and like you said, if he gets too close to the situation he is totally blind. I think he goes into denial and refuses to acknowledge what is happening in those situations.

Like this past season when stupid Satanist kid swamped places with Sam.

Yeah, the body swap ep... I think Dean wanted so bad to believe that Sam was randomly feeling happy and dorky that he just shrugged a lot of it off as his kid brother being weird. If it had happened at any other time he probably wouldn't have been so easily fooled, but it came right after Sam Interrupted, when they'd both been all crazy and emotionally messed up, so he probably explained away more than he normally would. But yeah, with anyone else, and probably with Sam at any other time, he wouldn't have been fooled.

Like when John was possessed with the YED. At first he wouldn't even consider the possibility that his dad could be possessed, and it was Sam who splashed holy water on him to make sure. That convinced Sam that everything was okay, but Dean picked up on little things later on that Sam missed.

I guess it's all part of the poker thing - Dean's good at reading people's tells, so he's always winning at poker. Sam's good at hiding his tells, not necessarily reading them in other people. ;)

Oh that's a good point with the poker. I always feel strongly that Dean CAN play a mean poker game and that is probably why - he can pick on people's tells. It's why he has been so successful. He only sucks when the stakes get personal and not being very good at keeping his own tells and facial emotions in check, people can read HIM like a book when he's emotional. Sam's the opposite. He's good at hiding everything, but he's not the best at reading people's tells.

They totally complete each other in that sense.

Now I wish we could have seen them conning people more often. The tow of them as a team is a pretty scary thought, LOL.

Yes! It's like when things get personal, Dean can't stop his emotions from taking control of him while Sam completely detaches himself from the situation, but at any other time it's reversed. They've kept them really true to that all through the series.

They really have. I've loved that. Consistency. So so much consistency. Even when the characters have grown or changed or been under pressure their core selves just didn't change. It's awesome.
