Supernatural 3x05: Bedtime Stories
Jul. 12th, 2010 07:55 pmI LOVE the boys' opening scene in this ep, where they're arguing in the car. Poor Sam, he wants to do SOMEthing, ANYTHING to feel like he's working towards saving Dean, and Dean just keeps cutting him off. That scene says so much about their dynamic to me - Dean honestly believes that Sam should do what he tells him because Dean is the oldest, while Sam gets so sick and tired of hearing it and being treated like he's inferior and can't make decisions for himself that he goes off and does exactly what he's told not to do. So yeah, the final scene of the episode came as no surprise.
Well, until Sam gave that little sigh and then blew the CRD away without so much as blinking. My jaw was on the FLOOR, man. Remember when they would even deliberate over whether or not to exorcise someone? By this time Sam had reached the point where he didn't even hesitate to KILL an innocent host simply because the demon was ticking him off. I mean, seriously?! That was AWESOME. Heartwrenching and disturbing... but awesome. ;)
It made me laugh when Dean said he wasn't going to kiss the frog. Isn't it a princess who's supposed to do that? And Dean didn't tell Sam it was his job?? He missed a perfect opportunity there. :P
I loooove that Dean became the "huntsman" in the Red Riding Hood story. I mean, how perfect was that??
Also love Sam's hesitation before bursting through the door the doctor had just shut in his face. For some reason it makes me laugh that this door wasn't even locked, but the doctor expected him to respect that he wasn't supposed to open it... and for a second Sam did. :P
I love and adore the long shot of Sam watching Dean walk down the hospital corridor at the end. That whole exchange between them was so perfect, with Dean commenting on the doc's wise words about letting people go, and then Sam's, "Is that what you want me to do, Dean? Just let you go?" Yeah, NOT GONNA HAPPEN. Perfect segue into the scene where he goes off in the middle of the night to summon the CRD.
Speaking of whom... Sandy! Aw. She was so freezing cold that night, and has said she wanted to look tough, so she didn't even bundle up between takes. Her skin was bright red, poor thing! And um... Jared, what's with killing your girlfriends on TV? *shakes head* ;)
Btw, when it was revealed later on that Dean's contract was held by Lilith, the CRD's comments in this ep about her boss being "he" were viewed as a mistake in continuity, but I'm wondering now if she was talking about Lucifer. Because technically you could see it that way.
Quotes -
Dude: You are the sketch artists, right?
Sam: Um...
Dean: Absolutely.
Sam: Yeah.
Dean: Yeah. That is exactly who my partner is. The things he can do with a pen.
Dean: *laughs at Sam's sketch* Boy, this is a piece of, uh, art.
Sam: *snatches it back* Yeah, like you could have done any better.
Sam: Thinkin' about fairy tales.
Dean: Oh, that's... that's nice. Do you think about fairy tales often?
Dean: It's a little crazy.
Sam: Crazy as what? Every day of our lives?
Dean: Touche.
Dean: Alright, maybe it is fairy tales. Totally messed-up fairy tales. I'll tell you one thing, there's no way I'm kissing a damn frog.
Dean: Dude, could you BE more gay?
Sam: *ponders*
Dean: Don't answer that.
Dean: Could be like Mischa Barton. The Sixth Sense, not The O.C.
Sam: What?
Dean: Hey, you know fairy tales, I know movies.
Dean: I'm gonna go stop the big bad wolf... which is the weirdest thing I've ever said.

So. Good. I have to say, the first time I saw this, I was also completely blown away. I do so adore badass!Sammy, though. He is kind of the ultimate, walking version of the adage "the road to hell is paved with good intentions", but it's just so awesome.
Beyond all of that, I just love this episode. I mean, fairy tales? So good. I laughed so hard at the "which is the weirdest thing I've ever said" line the first time. And it's really true, the original fairy tales were seriously messed up, so it was kind of interesting to see Supernatural take them on. I do feel badly for the doctor in the episode.
And, the sketch artist scene - just too good. Bwahaha. XD Although, when you see him sketching the tree in Home, it's actually pretty good. What's up with that?

So true. Poor Sam. :(

Speaking from personal experience, sometimes it's much easier to sketch the outline of a tree than to draw a person. And it looked like Sam filled that notebook with tree sketches, so maybe the first few totally sucked. ;)
