Supernatural 3x04: Sin City
Jul. 10th, 2010 05:26 pmThis episode reminded me how much I miss Don S. Davis. :(
Anyway. I couldn't believe how much foreshadow and outright finger-pointing they crammed into this episode.
Firstly, let's talk about the stuff that was said between Dean and Casey...
Dean: You have a god?
Casey: Sure. His name is Lucifer.
This was the first time Lucifer was really mentioned, and the first time we heard his sob story of being forced to bow to humans. IT WAS ALL A CLUE. *strikes Sherlock Holmes pose* She also talked about how some demons believed in him while others didn't (since he'd been locked away so long, we now know), and that the demons were all in chaos without a leader (which is why Lilith takes over so easily by the end of the season). It was all coming together, and we didn't even know it!
Also, this exchange stood out to me -
Casey: Do you believe in God, Dean? I'd be surprised if you did.
Dean: I don't know. I'd like to.
Sums him up to a T right there, doesn't it? Also, it kind of broke my heart when he asked her what Hell is like...
Casey: Judging from the trouble you've caused, I don't think you'll be getting the presidential suite.
Understatement. And when she asks if he's scared and he says no... yeah, he's totally lying. Oh, Dean. :(
Another thing that struck me - the priest demon seemed to be pushing Sam to want to do his own thing and be in charge, instead of always following after Dean. Yet another demon in a long, long line to pretend to be a friend or a mentor and prod him in that direction.
Something that struck me about Ritchie - compared to him, Dean doesn't look like such a horndog, LOL. Dean at least stays professional on the job. Ritchie couldn't seem to concentrate on anything useful when scantily-clad women were around. Made me feel a little better about Dean, after he'd been annoying me for the first few eps of the season.
The scene between Bobby and Ruby was fantastic. Kinda reminded me of the scene between Bobby and Crowley, where a demon's snarking off at him and Bobby shoots them just because he can, hahaha! Also, looking at that scene from a Ruby-arc standpoint, I can totally see why she wanted the Colt back in action - she wanted Sam to get used to killing humans along with demons, but she knew he wasn't ready yet for the hands-on approach with the knife, so a gun was a good jumping-off point. Once he'd get a little hardened and self-loathing about it, she'd start in on the whole "You know, if you used your powers, you could actually save the human" thing. She sooooo had him on a string all along!
What's interesting about Casey is that she really did seem to have a trace of compassion in her. And then Sam comes in with that cold, hard look on his face and blows her away while Dean is screaming at him not to. I love that contrast, like for a second you're unsure who's the good guy and who's the bad guy there. But there was still a glimmer of something in Sam's eyes, like he was trying to shut off his conscience and be ruthless but was also fighting against it, you know?
I'm so glad they gave us that scene between him and Ruby at the end to show us that that was the case, because she's the only character he would have talked about it with, and I'd had enough of wondering what was going through his mind - I wanted to KNOW what was going through his mind. That scene told us that he didn't like the things he had to do, but that he was going to do them anyway if it meant saving Dean. Gah! I love it. Especially when Sam pulls the Colt on her. Gives me shivers! And I love love love the very last moment of the episode, where you can see Ruby in the background of the shot and her face goes from happy-smiley to EVILSTARE just for like two frames right at the end. I love iiiiit!
I also love that Dean finally told Bobby what Azazel had said to him about Sam. The way he said, "You think something's wrong with my brother?" was so heartwrenching. And neither he nor Bobby seemed very convinced when they shrugged it off and said he was fine. Makes me wonder if Ruby also planned for Dean and/or Bobby to always be around when Sam showed signs of being "different," just so they'd start looking at him like he's a freak, thereby pushing Sam even deeper into secret communion with Ruby. Gah, she had everything worked out to the last detail!
And as for the lighter side of the episode... Sam's reaction when he realized Trotter wasn't a demon was SO PERFECT. His awkward smile and stammering and backing up toward the door... I LOVE IT SO MUCH. And how smart was he to take the bullets out of the gun so they could have it back? *pets him*
I thought it was hilarious that Dean hadn't memorized the exorcism yet (obviously counting on Sam to do that under normal circumstances), but I'm glad he's since taken care of that. Mostly. ;)
Also hilarious - the way Sam entered Casey's place when he was looking for Dean. You could see he was terrified of repeating the incident from 3x01, hahahaha! His face kills me. :D
Something that was kind of cute - Sam took out his phone when he got to Casey's place after Dean warned him to be careful. He was probably about to call Bobby, and then who appears behind him? Bobby! Heh. Did he think for a second, "Whoa, that was fast... wait a minute, I haven't even dialled yet!" ;)
You know, this episode actually had a pretty good moral hidden away in it somewhere - that catering to "harmless vice" isn't so harmless. One thing leads to another, and before you know it, you're in so deep you can't pull yourself out. I thought that was cool.
My favourite scene - Have a nice day. Hahahahahaha!!!
Randomness -
*This was the first time we heard the YED's actual name. "You think his friends just called him Yellow Eyes?" Ha!
*I'm glad Ruby quit curling her hair. She looks less like a Valley girl, more like a force to be reckoned with when it's straight. ;)
Quotes -
Bobby: *attempting to dissect the Colt* Well, the only thing it's good for now is figuring out what makes it tick.
Sam: So, what makes it tick?
Bobby: *glares*
Sam: *holds up hands in surrender*
Dean: *amused* So, if we wanna go check out these omens in Ohio, you think you can have that thing ready by this afternoon?
Sam: *snickers*
Bobby: Well, it won't kill demons by then, but I can promise you it'll kill YOU.
Ruby: Are you gonna stand there like a panty-waist, or are you gonna shoot me??
Bobby: *shoots her in the chest*
Ruby: Ouch. That smarts a little.
Bobby: What do you want?
Ruby: Peace on Earth. A new shirt.
Sam: Uh... have a nice day?
Dean: All you demons have such smart mouths.
Casey: It's a gift.
Casey: You Winchester boys are famous. Not Lohan-famous, but, you know.
Dean: A demon likes me. Sorry, I don't know how to respond to that.
Casey: You could say thanks.
Ruby: But on the bright side, I'll be there with you. That little fallen angel on your shoulder.
