I love the DVD special feature for this ep, with Kripke talking about his new baby inspiring him to make an episode where kids are the monsters, hahaha! That man is so disturbed. ;)

I think first and foremost I have to talk about Lisa here. I hated Dean's "bendiest weekend of my life" and "Gumby girl" comments, and I fully expected to hate the episode and be offended by the character of Lisa, but I ended up really loving her and the side of Dean that she brought out. It was like she made him realize that he wasn't a teenager anymore, and that part of him did yearn to settle down and raise a family. She quickly became an ideal of motherhood and womanhood for him rather than a sexy one-night stand, and we now know that that stayed with him all this time. I love that while he expected her to have frozen in time and be the same girl he'd met 9 years earlier, she'd gone from a wild girl who slept with any danger-vibe guy she came across to a devoted mom and independent single woman.

And honestly, I doubt many women would be willing to accept Dean's random comings and goings without a word from him for months in between, but I think it makes sense for Lisa. She seems very easy-going and independent, and she doesn't necessarily need a man in her life, but I think she had real feelings for Dean and was definitely grateful for what he did for them, and after he opened up to her at the end of this episode I think she could see how broken and lonely he was. I can't wait to see where the show goes with their relationship (please don't kill her off, writers!!), but in a lot of ways I think they're almost TOO perfect for each other.

I'm not quite sure how to explain that... I think they could easily make a long-term relationship work, but I can picture it being TOO easy, you know? These are two people who like a little excitement in their lives, and I feel as though Dean would always be searching for a Sam-like reaction from her to the things he does and says, and he wouldn't get that from her. So... I don't know, I feel as though something would always be missing for each of them, but they'd love each other regardless, and I'm really not explaining my thoughts very well here, LOL. I ship these two like mad, anyway, and even though I'm sure Dean won't stick to the settled-down family man thing for very long, I hope they somehow keep her in the show and give the boys a home to return to every now and then. Although I'm not getting my hopes up. :P

Anyway...

I loved Sam secretly working with Bobby, the scenes with Ruby are still among my faves, the scene where Sam made all the phone calls was unbelievably well edited, and while at first I thought Ben was way over-the-top, he'd grown on me by the end of the episode. But seriously, it creeps me out that an 8-year-old would be allowed to act like that around little girls. And what kid is a total clone of a parent they've never met, or at most barely know? Bugged me a little. I love that he was a hero at the end, though, and I bet he's going to want Dean to teach him all about hunting. I really really really want to see that, with Ben begging him to teach him stuff while Dean is trying to distance himself from it completely, you know? That would be awesome.

The actress playing Katie's mom was absolutely amazing. I felt so bad for that poor woman. And Kripke says they wrote that whole episode just for the scene where she drives the car into the lake, heh. I'm glad, because that scene was incredible.

Ruby and her French fries obsession! The ketchup was TOTALLY FORESHADOW. And I loved it when Sam yelled at her to tell him who she was, and the eyes going black, and yeah okay THAT WHOLE ENTIRE SCENE, and grabbing his attention once and for all at the end by telling him she could save his brother. I love iiiiit.

You know, I really didn't like Dean for most of the first two eps of season 3, but when we saw his vulnerability at the end of this ep, he finally won me over again. That last scene between him and Lisa was so heartbreaking. And he really would be a proud dad. *sniffle*

Randomness -
*Siegfried Houdini? Really? :P
*I keep trying to explain this away, but... nope, that whole building would have gone up in flames with the way Sam waved that flamethrower around. ;)
*Lisa rushing forward to kiss Dean goodbye was not in the script. The director told her to do it, but didn't warn Jensen beforehand because he wanted an honest reaction. Ha!

Quotes -

Sam: *hangs up phone when Dean walks up* Hey.
Dean: Who was that?
Sam: Oh, I was just ordering pizza.
Dean: Dude, you do realize that you're in a restaurant.
Sam: Yeah. Yeah, oh yeah. I just felt like pizza, you know?
Dean: *stares* Okay, Weirdy McWeirderton.

Dean: Come on, have a heart, huh? It's my dying wish!
Sam: Yeah, well, how many dying wishes are you gonna get?
Dean: As many as I can squeeze out.

Ruby: *steals one of Sam's French fries* These are amazing. It's like deep-fried crack! Try some.

Sam: That knife you had... you can kill demons with that thing?
Ruby: Sure comes in handy when I have to swoop in and save the damsel in distress.
Sam: Where'd you get it?
Ruby: Sky Mall.

Sam: Why are you following me?
Ruby: I'm interested in you.
Sam: WHY?
Ruby: Because you're tall. I love a tall man.

Dean: Great. Well, we'll just bust in, drag the kids out, torch 'em on the front lawn. That'll play great with the neighbours.

Ruby: *holds up hand* God's honest truth. Or...whatever.
Sam: You're a demon!
Ruby: Don't be such a racist.

It's a good episode... but I hate it! Makes sense, right!? Not! It's just... Lisa and Ruby!? Just, no.

I love all the Sam/Ruby bits from this episode. The scene in the diner particularly won me over. And foreshadowing with the ketchup? I never even thought about it that way before! I need to do a re-watch too. You're tempting me. :P

Yessss, do a rewatch!! That's what hiatuses (hiati?) are FOR. :P

I think this ep was when I secretly began enjoying Ruby a lot. She was just so different from what I'd been expecting, I loved it. :)

Ben is totally Dean's kid. I don't care what Kripke says.

I really liked this ep, and I'm glad they brought Lisa back. I think she's one of my favorite secondary characters, and I hope they give her a little more screen time next season.

Also, Ruuuuuuuuby! Well, my favorite version of Ruby. ;)

Yeah, yeah. :P

I love Lisa, too. The actress is awesome. I'm hoping and praying and vibing to Sera like CRAZY that she doesn't get killed off. *crosses every part of anatomy that can be crossed*

Actually, since I read your review and then saw the ep today, I was looking at this. I don't think the house would have burned. Remember, houses are built with fire retardant materials and coatings, and what usually goes up first are the "soft" things - curtains, furniture with upholstery.

At 400°F, curtains, wallpaper and bedding ignite. Wood studs spontaneously combust, or pyrolize, at about 450°F (steel studs melt and deform at only slightly higher temperatures). - I found that in an article on home building. I don't think that homemade flame thrower was putting out that kind of heat, not at the ends of the flames.

Sam was aiming the flames at the monster and while she moved around a lot, the flames weren't touching the wood of the house framing for longer than seconds, and it takes longer than that for dense wood to catch. That's why when you build a fire camping, you start with kindling - paper or leaves or dry pine needles, and get the fire going so the wood can catch.

*geek*

Huh. Really? I had no idea it would be that hard to start a fire, LOL. So much for all those "never play with matches" speeches. ;)

Hehehe I watch way too much Discovery channel etc etc <.<

It's not hard if you have the right materials, but the inside of the building was, while wood, bare of the type of combustibles that go up first... ^^;

Not playing with matches is still a good thing to tell kids, for sure. ;)
