Supernatural 2x17: Heart
Jul. 2nd, 2010 04:36 pmPosting this today because I want to skip it and watch Hollywood Babylon tonight. I really can't stand this episode.
I tried to like it, I really did. It's a Sam episode! I usually take whatever I can get if it gives me lots of Sam. But to me, this ep is like Route666 in that it seems to have been written around the sex scene, to heck with actually making it a well-plotted, decent episode. That makes it seem awkward, forced, and uncomfortable to me, and that does NOT make for fun TV.
But seriously, the whole Harlequin, melodramatic "once this is over, you'll never have to see me again" thing? When does Sam ever talk like that?! Just bugged me. And I'm sorry, but Madison dumping her underwear in front of him and folding them in his face was just disgusting. Nice ladylike behaviour there, chicka. Blech. And the werewolf was totally not scary in the least. Nor did it LOOK like a werewolf. And it was kind of obvious that she hadn't been cured, dudes. *rolls eyes*
However. Every ep of Supernatural has its moments of awesomeness, and this episode is no exception. There are two scenes from it that I really love -
Rock, paper, scissors! What amuses me is that they did a scene just like this in an episode of Psych, heehee! I love that they later bring this back in exactly the same way, too. Poor Dean, "always with the scissors." ;)
And of course, the final scene. For a while it bugged me that an episode I couldn't stand had my favourite ending of the entire series, and I hated the ep on the whole even more because of it, heh. It has since been eclipsed and now stands somewhere down past the top 5 for me, but it's still an amazingly awesome scene. How gorgeous is that SONG??
Just in case anyone doesn't know the story behind it - in order to get into the moment, Jared pictured in his mind being forced to euthanize his beloved dogs, so his tears during his coverage were 100% real. So real that he was completely wrecked by the time they started setting up for Jensen's coverage. Jensen asked him what he'd been thinking about to get to that place, so Jared told him. Jensen has mentioned before that he loves those dogs like his own, and he knows that Jared thinks of them as almost his children, so this thought was rattling around in his head when they started filming his coverage, and he just started crying out of sympathy. It was NOT scripted for Dean to cry. But of course, his one perfectly-timed tear coupled with the flinch when the gun goes off is what makes that scene all the more powerful, and Jared knew it. As soon as they'd filmed it, he came up to Jensen and said, "Thanks for stealing my scene, jackass." Heehee! Because he totally did. :P

Date: 2010-07-06 12:05 am (UTC)I view Madison not as a girl but as a monster. She's a werewolf, before Sam ever meets her, and she has no idea of how deeply this has altered her personality, although she does tell Sam about it. So yes, your comment about dogs sniffing each other's butts? Hey, they do! Canines are what they are. Sam has always had to live, even when he didn't know it, with being part monster. It makes sense to me that he gravitated towards her and she to him.
One of the coolest things about this episode is that it was a good werewolf story, because the classic werewolf story is a tragedy, and ends with the death of the protagonist.
As for Sam being melodramatic, well yes, he was in his emo-ness but I think it was because his own fears about himself were piling up on him as the season progressed. If Dean had been in earshot, he never would have used those words, because Dean would have rolled his eyes and given him hell for it, but I think Dean would not have considered it out of character. ;)
I don't expect this to alter your views at all, I just thought I'd toss this out for you anyway. :D
And rereading this, I just got some almighty deja-vu, so if I have said these things before to you, feel free to delete from your journal and your memory. <.<

Date: 2010-07-06 12:17 am (UTC)I love the way it's mentioned in later seasons, though - Dean's comment that Sam's always sleeping with monsters, and the joke in It's a Terrible Life that Madison's number turned out to be an animal hospital, heh. Because it's true - Sam does seem to be drawn to women who have some kind of darkness inside them, because part of him relates to that.
